Synastry lays two tropical charts over each other and reads the angles between planets: her Venus trine his Mars, and so on. Guna Milan asks a different question with different inputs. It compares the two Moons, measured in the sidereal zodiac, through eight fixed tests, and returns a score.

Because the sidereal zodiac sits about 24° behind the tropical one, your Vedic Moon sign is often one sign earlier than the Moon sign a Western site gives you. That is not an error on either side; they measure from different starting points.

So this calculator does not do synastry. It does the Vedic match used for Indian marriages, computed from both full birth charts. If both of you know your birth times, it is the more specific of the two systems: it names the exact tests you pass and fail.

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart. It covers about 13° of the zodiac a day, and one nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, so the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day. A birth time that is off by several hours can move a Moon into the next nakshatra, and Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi all change with it.

The Manglik check needs the time even more. It looks at the house Mars occupies counted from the ascendant, and the ascendant changes sign about every two hours.

If one of you has only an approximate time, the result tells you whether the score would hold across that uncertainty, before you read anything into it.

A total is a summary, and two of its most-feared results are often cancelled. Nadi dosha (0 of 8 on Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha (0 of 7) each have classical exceptions. A Manglik chart can be cancelled too — for example by Mars sitting in its own or exaltation sign, or by Jupiter aspecting Mars. Whether an exception applies depends on the actual charts, not the score.

Guna Milan also says nothing about timing. When each of you is in a period that favours marriage is a separate question, read from the dashas of both charts.
