How these numbers are worked out

Three numbers come out of a name and a date of birth, and they are not interchangeable. Your Mulank (root number) reduces the day of the month alone. Your Bhagyank (destiny number) reduces the entire date — day, month and year. Your Namank (name number) comes from the letters of your name. The calculator above does all three at once; below is the arithmetic it uses, so you can check it by hand.

The Chaldean letter values

This is where most online calculators quietly differ. The Chaldean system — the one used across Indian numerology, and the one this tool implements — assigns letters values 1 to 8 only. There is deliberately no 9, because 9 was held to be sacred and not given to any letter. The Western Pythagorean system runs 1 to 9 and simply follows the alphabet in order, so it produces a different name number for the same name. Neither is a corruption of the other, but mixing their outputs is meaningless.

Add the values of every letter in your name, then reduce to a single digit — except 11, 22 and 33, which are held as master numbers and not reduced.

What each number is ruled by

This mapping is what makes Chaldean numerology Vedic rather than a parlour trick: each number answers to a graha, so a numerology reading and a birth chart are describing the same nine forces in two different languages.

The nine Mulanks

Your Mulank is the reduced day of your birth — the 23rd gives 2+3 = 5, the 30th gives 3. It is the number people mean when they say "my number", and it is the one that does not need your birth year at all.
