How to Check Kundli Matching (Ashtakoot Milan) for Marriage

Kundli matching is the Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility. The most common system is Ashtakoot Milan — 8 tests that together give a score out of 36. Here is how to run it, what the score means, and what to check beyond the score.

  1. 1

    Generate both Kundlis

You need an accurate Kundli for both partners — date, time and place of birth for each. The Moon sign (Rashi) and Nakshatra are the foundation of Ashtakoot matching, so accuracy of Moon placement is critical. Even approximate birth times usually give a reliable Rashi and Nakshatra.

    Run Ashtakoot Guna Milan

Enter both sets of birth details in the Kundli matching tool. GrahAI calculates all 8 Koots: Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoota (7) and Nadi (8). The maximum is 36 Gunas. The matching tool shows the score for each Koot separately so you can see where compatibility is strong and where it needs attention.

    Understand what score means what

A score of 18 or above is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage; 26–36 is considered very good. Scores below 18 are not automatic disqualifiers — they are a flag to examine the specific Koots that failed and whether those areas can be managed. Nadi Dosha (0 in the Nadi Koot) is given extra weight and checked separately from the total.

Check for Mangal Dosha in both charts

Mangal Dosha is checked separately from the Guna score. If one partner has Mangal Dosha and the other does not, traditional practice advises caution. If both are Manglik, the Doshas are considered to cancel. Check Mangal Dosha presence, house placement and whether cancellation factors apply.

Look at the 7th house in both charts

Ashtakoot is a Moon-sign compatibility check; the 7th house (house of marriage and partnerships) in the birth chart tells you about marriage itself. Who is the 7th lord? What sign is on the 7th cusp? Are there benefic or malefic planets in the 7th house? A strong 7th house supports marriage even if the Guna score is modest.

Common questions

18 is traditionally the minimum acceptable threshold, but the distribution matters as much as the total. A score of 18 where Nadi and Gana are intact is different from 18 where Nadi Dosha is present. Look at which Koots scored and which didn't, and check the 7th house separately — the overall picture matters more than whether the number clears the threshold.
