Why No Honest Chart Reading Names a Number
This is the first thing to say, because it is the thing most pages answering this query get wrong.
Classical Jyotish texts do contain rules that appear to yield a count of children. They were written for a world without contraception, without fertility medicine, and with very different infant mortality. Applying them literally today produces confident numbers that are not true, and people make real decisions on them.
What the chart genuinely describes is the strength of the 5th house and its lord, Jupiter's condition as the natural significator (putra karaka), the santan yogas present or absent, and the dasha periods that activate all of it. That is a picture of support and timing.
What it does not describe is a number, and it cannot substitute for a doctor. If you are trying to conceive and it is not happening, the useful appointment is a medical one.
The Four Factors a Reading Actually Weighs
The 5th house and its lord. The primary seat of children. Its occupants, its lord's placement and that lord's dignity set the baseline.
Jupiter (Guru). The natural karaka for children in Vedic astrology. Jupiter's house, sign and strength colour the whole reading regardless of what sits in the 5th.
The Saptamsa (D-7). The divisional chart specifically for progeny. A 5th house that looks strong in the main chart and weak in the D-7 tells a different story than one strong in both — this is the layer most free readings skip entirely.
The dasha sequence. Timing. Which periods activate the 5th lord and Jupiter, computed from your Moon's nakshatra at birth.

A useful reading here answers three things: whether the classical indicators for children are supported or obstructed in your chart, which dasha windows the tradition associates with that part of life, and which remedial practices — if any — the chart actually calls for rather than the generic list.
