Which Hand Do You Read in Palmistry — Left or Right?

It is the first question in every palm reading, and there are two answers depending on tradition. Both are used today, and both agree that the two hands are best read together — the differences between them are some of the most revealing details in a reading.

The modern rule: your dominant hand

Most palmists today read the dominant hand — the one you write with — as the life you are actively shaping: your choices, habits and current direction. The non-dominant hand shows inherited tendencies and potential: the temperament you started with. If you are left-handed, the rule simply flips; if you are ambidextrous, palmists usually read the hand you use for fine work, and compare both closely.

The traditional Indian rule

Classical Hast Samudrika reads the right hand for men and the left hand for women. The rule comes from the traditional association of the right side with the masculine and the left with the feminine. Many Indian palmists still follow it, especially for questions of marriage and family; others now combine it with the dominant-hand rule, reading the traditional hand first and the dominant hand for the present.

When your two palms look different

Differences between the hands are the most interesting part of a reading. A head line that is joined to the life line on the passive hand but separate on the active hand, for example, suggests someone who grew more independent than their upbringing. A fate line that appears only on the dominant hand describes a direction you created rather than inherited. Large differences point to a life that has moved far from where it started — common among people who have moved countries or changed careers.

Do the lines on your palm change?

Yes. The major lines are formed before birth and change slowly, but the minor lines — and the depth, length and markings of the major ones — can change over months and years. Palmists notice the dominant hand changing most, which is one reason it is read for the life you are actively shaping.

That is also why a reading is best repeated after a few years or a major life change. A new branch on the fate line or a fading island on the head line is read as the palm catching up with who you have become — a practical reason to photograph your palm again rather than rely on an old reading.

Photographing your palm for an AI reading

Photograph the hand you want read — or both. For the clearest reading:

  • Open the hand fully, fingers slightly apart, palm facing the camera.
  • Use natural daylight, ideally from the side, and avoid flash, which flattens the lines.
  • Hold the camera about 20–30 cm above the palm, so the whole hand from wrist to fingertips is in frame.
  • Keep the photo in focus — tap the palm on your phone screen before taking it.

The AI reader tells you if the lines are too faint and asks for another photo.

What does it mean if my left and right palms are different?

Differences show how far your life has moved from your starting temperament — for example, becoming more independent than your upbringing.

Which hand is read for women in Indian palmistry?

Traditional Hast Samudrika reads the left hand for women and the right for men, though many palmists now also read the dominant hand.

Do palm lines change over time?

Yes. Minor lines and the depth and markings of major lines can change over years, especially on the dominant hand.
