The atmakaraka is the planet whose lesson your life keeps returning to. In Jaimini's framing it is the "king" of the chart — not the most benefic planet, and emphatically not the luckiest, but the one carrying the soul's central unfinished business.

That distinction matters, because a difficult atmakaraka is not bad news. It is a description of the curriculum.

- Sun — authority, ego, the father, and the long negotiation between self-importance and genuine self-respect. - Moon — emotional need, the mother, belonging; a life organised around care given and care wanted. - Mars — courage, conflict, competition; learning where to spend force and where to withhold it. - Mercury — communication, discrimination, commerce; the pull between cleverness and wisdom. - Jupiter — meaning, teaching, belief; the risk of certainty and the work of earning it. - Venus — love, beauty, attachment, pleasure; the classical hardest atmakaraka, because it asks for renunciation of exactly what it desires. - Saturn — time, limitation, endurance, service; a life that gives late and gives durably.

The traditional reading is that the atmakaraka's afflictions are the point, not an accident. A wounded Venus atmakaraka does not mean a loveless life; it means love is the arena where the work happens. That reframing is most of the value of knowing yours.

The atmakaraka on its own is a theme. The Karakamsha is where that theme plays out.

Take the sign your atmakaraka occupies in the navamsa (D-9) and treat it as an ascendant. That is the Karakamsha lagna, and Jaimini reads it as the chart of the soul's chosen field — houses counted from it describe how the atmakaraka's agenda expresses in this lifetime. A Karakamsha in a fiery sign spends the theme through action and visibility; in a watery one, through feeling and withdrawal.

The classical readings taken from the Karakamsha lagna include the direction of learning and profession (planets in and aspecting its 5th and 10th), the nature of obstacles (its 6th and 8th), and the shape of eventual release (its 12th). Which of these is worth your attention depends entirely on which planet is doing the asking — a Saturn atmakaraka and a Venus atmakaraka in the same Karakamsha sign are living quite different lives.

The same ranking that hands you an atmakaraka at the top hands you a Darakaraka at the bottom, and it is the most practically useful of the seven for most people asking.

The Darakaraka is the planet holding the lowest degree in its sign, and it significates the spouse. Classical Jaimini reads it as a description of the partner: the planet's nature, the sign it occupies, and — again through the navamsa — its Darakaramsa, the D-9 sign it falls in. A Saturn darakaraka and a Venus darakaraka describe two very different people and two very different marriages.

It is worth being careful about what this is. It is a characterisation, not an identification. Vedic astrology assigns significations — Mercury to youthfulness and wit, Saturn to seriousness, age-difference and endurance, Jupiter to learning and moral seriousness — and the Darakaraka maps your chart onto that vocabulary. It does not produce a name, a nationality or a date, and any tool that claims to is inventing.

Read alongside the 7th house, Venus, and the 7th lord's navamsa placement, the Darakaraka is a genuine fourth witness rather than a repetition — which is exactly why the classical texts bother with it.
