Two things, and they are not the same thing.

Marriage and partnership. The navamsa is the classical chart of the spouse and of married life. The D-9 ascendant, the condition of its 7th house, and where your 7th lord from the birth chart lands in the D-9 together describe the partnership you actually get — as distinct from the one your D-1 chart merely promises.

Durability — and this is the part most readings skip. The D-9 is the strength test for every planet in your chart. A planet can look magnificent in the birth chart and fall apart in the navamsa, and when it does, the promise it carries tends not to hold up under pressure. The reverse is the more encouraging case: a planet that looks weak or debilitated in D-1 but sits strong in D-9 usually delivers late, quietly, and more reliably than the chart first suggested.

Vargottama is the standout signal. A planet occupying the same sign in both D-1 and D-9 is vargottama — doubled, reinforced, and unusually stable in whatever it governs. Vargottama placements are one of the few things in a chart that are genuinely unambiguous, and your reading names every one you have.

This is why a career or marriage reading built on the birth chart alone is guessing at half the picture. The D-1 says what is promised. The D-9 says whether it holds.

The specific things a navamsa reading looks at, in the order they matter:

- The D-9 ascendant and its lord — the frame of your married life, and the temperament you bring into partnership rather than the one you show the world. - Venus and Jupiter in the D-9 — Venus for the spouse in a man's chart and for relational ease generally; Jupiter for the husband in a woman's chart in the classical convention, and for the moral and material quality of the union in both. - Where your D-1 seventh lord lands in the D-9 — arguably the single most informative placement for describing a spouse's nature and background. - The Darakaraka — the Jaimini spouse significator, which is simply whichever of the seven grahas holds the lowest degree in its sign. Its position in the navamsa (the Darakaramsa) is a classical description of the partner. It is computed, not chosen. - Afflictions repeated across both charts — a difficulty that shows in D-1 and again in D-9 is structural. One that appears in only one of them usually is not.

On timing: the navamsa describes the marriage; the Vimshottari dasha decides when. A marriage window is a dasha or antardasha of the 7th lord, of Venus, or of a planet sitting in the 7th — activated by Jupiter transiting the 7th house or the 7th from the Moon. The D-9 tells you what arrives; the dasha tells you when it is due.

Search "navamsa chart calculator" and you will get a dozen tools that render a twelve-box grid, fill it with abbreviations, and stop. That is not a reading — it is a data dump, and it is the reason so many people paste the resulting image into ChatGPT and ask it what the chart means.

That second step is where it goes wrong. A general-purpose chatbot has no ephemeris. Asked about a chart it cannot compute, it will confidently invent degrees, place planets in signs they are not in, and produce a fluent reading of a chart that does not exist. The output is indistinguishable from a real one unless you already know your placements — which is precisely the person asking.
