About 8 in 10 people have a different Sun sign in Vedic astrology
We computed the Western and Vedic Sun sign for all 21,915 birth dates from 1950 to 2009. Taylor Swift, Barack Obama and Beyoncé all land in a different sign.

Most people know their star sign from the Western zodiac. Vedic astrology, the tradition from India, uses a different zodiac, and for most birthdays the answer changes. We computed both signs for all 21,915 birth dates from 1950 to 2009. 71.7% land in a different sign, 14.6% keep the same one, and for 13.7% the Sun changed sign around that date, so the answer depends on the time of birth.
Among the dates with a clear answer, 83.1% change. The simple arithmetic agrees: the two zodiacs are now about 24° apart and each sign spans 30°, which is about 8 in 10.
Why there are two zodiacs
The Western, or tropical, zodiac starts Aries at the March equinox, so its signs follow the seasons. The Vedic, or sidereal, zodiac is measured against the stars. Earth’s axis slowly wobbles, so the equinox drifts against the stars and the two zodiacs move apart. On the Lahiri measure, the most widely used in Vedic astrology, the gap was 23.17° in mid-1950 and 24.23° in mid-2026.
Your sign moves back by one
The Vedic Sun sign is always the Western sign or the one before it. Only the last few days of each Western sign stay put. These dates are for 1995 and shift by about a day between years.

Some famous birthdays
Taylor Swift, born 13 December 1989, is a Sagittarius in the Western zodiac and a Scorpio in the Vedic one. Michelle Obama and Brad Pitt are among those who keep their sign. These are computed from public birth dates and say nothing about the people named, none of whom has any connection to GrahAI.

What this does and does not show
This is about how two systems divide the sky. It does not show that either zodiac describes people accurately, and it is not evidence for or against astrology. It covers the Sun sign only. A Vedic chart also reads the Moon sign and rising sign, which need a birth time and place.
How the analysis was done
- Dates: every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2009, 21,915 in all, each counted once.
- Signs: the Sun’s position from Swiss Ephemeris. Western signs are measured from the equinox, Vedic signs after subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Depends on birth time: a birth date exists for about 50 hours around the world. If the Sun changed sign in either zodiac during those hours, we counted the date separately rather than choose a side.
- No customer data: this uses calendar dates only, not GrahAI’s records.
Limitations
- Every calendar date counts equally. Real births are not spread evenly across the year, so the share among living people may differ slightly.
- Other Vedic ayanamsas differ slightly from Lahiri, so a few dates near a sign change would move.
- The 50-hour window is cautious. With an exact birth time and place, most of the 13.7% would have a clear answer.

How this article was made
The figures come from a computation script that uses only calendar dates and the Swiss Ephemeris; the chart is drawn from the same output. Celebrity birth dates come from GrahAI’s records, which name their sources. Drafting was AI-assisted, every figure was checked against that output, and Rahul Dubey reviewed the article before publication.
