What a Vedic Astrology Chart Is

A Vedic astrology chart, also called a kundli or a Jyotish chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets stood at the moment and place of your birth. "Hindu astrology" and "Indian astrology" are other names for the same system.

Three things set it apart from the Western chart you may already know:

  • The sidereal zodiac. Positions are measured against the fixed stars, not the equinox, so most planets sit about 24° earlier than in a Western chart. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa.
  • Whole-sign houses. The sign rising at birth, the lagna (ascendant), becomes the 1st house in its entirety, the next sign the 2nd, and so on round the zodiac.
  • Nine grahas. The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu, the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path.

How to Read a North Indian Chart

The North Indian chart is the diamond-shaped one. Its houses never move: house 1 is always the top-centre diamond, and the houses run anti-clockwise from there.

What moves is the signs. The small number in each house is the sign in it (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus, through 12 = Pisces), and those numbers rotate with your ascendant. So to read a North Indian chart:

1. Look at the top-centre diamond. The number there is your ascendant sign. 2. Count anti-clockwise to find any house you want. 3. A planet's house is the diamond it sits in; its sign is the number written in that diamond.

It is the default layout on this page.

How to Read a South Indian Chart

The South Indian chart is the square grid with an empty centre. Here it is the signs that never move: Pisces is the top-left box, Aries the next one along, and the signs run clockwise round the outside to Aquarius.

What moves is the houses. Your ascendant is the box marked as the lagna, and that box is your 1st house; count clockwise from it for the rest. A planet's sign is simply the box it sits in, which is why many astrologers find this layout faster for spotting sign placements.

Both layouts contain exactly the same information. Switch between them in the calculator above and the planets stay in the same signs and houses.

What Each of the Twelve Houses Covers

Each house is a field of life. These are the classical significations a reading starts from:

  • 1st — the self, body and temperament
  • 2nd — wealth, family, speech
  • 3rd — siblings, courage, effort
  • 4th — mother, home, inner peace
  • 5th — children, intellect, creativity
  • 6th — illness, debt, rivals, service
  • 7th — marriage and partnerships
  • 8th — longevity, sudden change, hidden matters
  • 9th — fortune, father, dharma, teachers
  • 10th — career and public standing
  • 11th — gains, income, networks
  • 12th — loss, expense, foreign lands, liberation

A house is read with its lord (the planet ruling the sign in it), the planets sitting in it, and the planets aspecting it. A full reading combines all three.

Five Things to Find on Your Chart First

If you are reading a Vedic chart for the first time, find these five things before anything else:

1. Your ascendant and its lord. The lagna sets the whole frame, and where its ruler sits shows where your life's attention tends to go. 2. Your Moon sign and nakshatra. Vedic astrology gives the Moon more weight than the Sun. Your Moon sign is your rashi, and your nakshatra drives your dasha periods and your compatibility score. 3. Your Vedic Sun sign. It is often one sign earlier than your Western sign, for the sidereal reason above. 4. Planets in the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. These angular houses, the kendras, are where planets act most visibly. 5. Your current dasha. The Vimshottari dasha says which planet's period you are in now, and it is the main timing tool. The calculator shows your current period with its dates.
