If you have a western birth chart and a Vedic one and they disagree, neither is broken. They are measuring from different starting points.

Tropical astrology, the western default, anchors 0° Aries to the March equinox — the Sun's position at the start of spring. Sidereal astrology, which is what Vedic astrology means, anchors the zodiac to the fixed stars.

These two coincided roughly seventeen centuries ago. Since then the Earth's axial precession has pulled them apart by about 24 degrees, and the gap widens by roughly 50 arcseconds a year. That offset is called the ayanamsa; the Lahiri ayanamsa is the Indian government standard and the one used here.

The practical consequence is blunt: around 80% of people have a different Sun sign in the two systems. Twenty-four degrees is most of a sign, so unless you were born in the last few days of a tropical sign, your sidereal Sun is one sign earlier. A tropical Leo is very often a sidereal Cancer.

This is the single most common reason someone says "Vedic astrology got my sign wrong". It did not — it is measuring against the constellations the Sun is actually in front of, which is what the jyotish tradition has always done. Neither system is a corruption of the other; they answer the question from different anchors, and mixing their outputs is what produces nonsense.

The ascendant (lagna) and its lord — the frame everything else is read against, and the most birth-time-sensitive value in the chart. The ascendant moves a full degree roughly every four minutes.

The nine grahas by sign, house and dignity — not merely where each planet is, but whether it is exalted, debilitated, in its own sign, or in an enemy's. Dignity is what separates "Mars in the 10th" as an asset from the same placement as a liability.

The twelve houses and their lords — where each house's ruler has gone determines how that area of life actually behaves, and this is usually more informative than what is sitting in the house.

Your Moon's nakshatra — the 27-fold lunar division. It sets your Vimshottari dasha sequence and carries a layer of temperament that sign-level reading misses entirely.

Three inputs, and they are not equally important.

Date fixes the slow planets. Jupiter and Saturn barely move in a day, so their signs are certain from the date alone.

Place fixes the geometry — and this is where tools built only for India quietly fail everyone else. House cusps depend on the local sidereal time at your coordinates. A calculator that defaults to IST computes a chart for the wrong moment when you were born in New Jersey, Toronto or Dubai, and the ascendant can land a full sign away. Every house-based reading built on it is then wrong in a way nothing flags. We derive the timezone from your birth coordinates, including the historical offset in force on that date, rather than assuming one.

Time fixes the ascendant, the houses and the divisional charts, and it is the input people most often lack. What degrades without an accurate time:

- The ascendant shifts roughly a degree every four minutes — an hour of error moves it about 15°, often into the next sign. - House positions for every planet move with it, so the entire house-based reading is affected. - The D-9 and D-10 are the most fragile of all, since their divisions are 3°20' and 3° wide. - The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, which can shift its nakshatra and therefore your whole dasha timeline.

What survives an unknown birth time: planetary signs (except sometimes the Moon), most dignities, and general yogas. That is a real reading — just not a house-based or divisional one.
