What counts as a dosha — and what cancels one

A dosha is a specific, checkable configuration, not a verdict on a life. The rules below are exactly what the calculator above applies, and they are worth reading before you run it — particularly the cancellations, which are the half of the tradition most pages on this subject leave out.

Mangal Dosha (Manglik / Kuja Dosha)

Mars occupying any of 6 houses from the ascendant. Each of those houses touches marriage in a different way, which is why the same label covers quite different situations.

The four cancellations this tool checks

Any one of these and the dosha is treated as cancelled. This matters more than the detection itself: a large share of charts that trip the house rule also meet a cancellation, and a tool that reports the first without checking the second is manufacturing anxiety it cannot justify.

   Mars is in its own sign or exalted

   Aries or Scorpio (its own signs) or Capricorn (exaltation). A strong Mars does not damage the house it sits in — it defends it.

   Jupiter aspects Mars

   Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects are the classical antidote. Where Jupiter looks, Mars is restrained rather than removed.

   Mars sits in the 2nd house in a Mercury sign

   Gemini or Virgo. Mercury's signs redirect Mars into speech and commerce, which is why the 2nd-house case is the mildest of the six.

   Venus and Jupiter both occupy kendra houses

   Both benefics in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th outweigh the affliction — the chart has more protection than it has damage.

Kaal Sarp Dosha

All seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — falling on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. It is a whole-chart condition rather than a placement, so it is either present or it is not; there is no partial version, and a single planet outside the axis ends it. This is why it is far rarer than the number of pages selling remedies for it would suggest.

Pitra Dosha

Read from affliction to the 9th house and the Sun — the significators of father and lineage. Unlike the two above it is a matter of degree rather than a binary, which is why an honest tool reports it with its cause attached rather than as a yes or no.

Everything above is general and applies identically to everyone. Whether any of it is in your chart depends on your ascendant, which advances a full degree roughly every four minutes — so a birth time that is off by half an hour can move Mars into or out of one of those six houses entirely.
