How do I know if I am in Sade Sati?

It is determined by your natal Moon's sign, not your sun sign. Saturn must currently occupy the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, or the sign after it. Because it depends on the Moon, an accurate birth date, time and place are needed.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. It is a period of consolidation and pressure that tends to remove what is not structurally sound. Which areas of life it touches depends on where the transited signs fall in your chart, which is why two people in Sade Sati at the same time experience it differently.

The three phases are not the same

Treating seven and a half years as one undifferentiated bad patch is the most common mistake made with this transit. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each of the three signs, and they do different things.

Rising

Saturn 12th from your Moon

Costs, disturbed sleep, distance from home or family, and expenditure that arrives before the income that justifies it. The phase people notice last and, looking back, started first.

Peak

Saturn Over your Moon itself

The one that is felt directly — health, mood, and the sense that effort is not converting. Also the phase that does the actual work: what is built here tends to hold.

Setting

Saturn 2nd from your Moon

Money, family and speech. Pressure moves outward from the person to their circumstances, and usually eases through it rather than ending abruptly.
